Dear Fellow Xaverians,
One of the missions that Alsoc and the School have taken up in earnest is “Caring for
Our Common Home” This is one of the “Universal Apostolic Preferences” of the Jesuits.
In the words of the official communication to us:
“The Preferences give a horizon, a point of reference to the whole Society of Jesus.
They capture our imaginations and awaken our desires. They unite us in our mission…”
The goal of “Caring for Our Common Home” is to protect, renew and preserve the Earth
which is the common home for humanity.
Over the past year, under the leadership and guidance of Fr. Thamacin, Alsoc and the
school have been undertaking several tree plantation drives in and around Kolkata and
planted over 2,000 trees. On Earth Day, we had organized a large-scale webinar with
illustrious panelists. (The recording is available at: https://youtu.be/47k-49Ja3fs)
This year we have decided to intensify these efforts and have undertaken an effort to
plant and/or donate over 5,000 trees in various locations. We have already started this
task and have made a visit to the Jesuit mission in Chamrusai, West Midnapore, where
we have donated a large number of coconut trees to the local villagers who will use the
produce of the trees to augment their resources. We have also identified several sites in
the Sundarbans and various parts of South 24 Parganas where trees have been
damaged by the cyclones Amphan and Yaas and together with the Forest Department
of the West Bengal Government have identified 4 schools where we will be planting
trees this weekend. Our goal is to keep increasing our reach and scope and to make
this an annual undertaking.
I invite all Alsoc members who wish to support this activity to reach out to us. We need
help both in terms of financial resources and volunteer resources. Several members
have already committed their support to this project in the form of donation of trees.
With your support, I am confident Alsoc will be able to be increase its reach and further
its mission of “Caring for Our Common Home.” For those who wish to help support this
